Open Cosmos, a satellite technology firm, will manufacture and operate the first satellite of the Balearic Islands, to address climate change and promote sustainable tourism in the area. The company will design, build, and manage the satellite, which aims to provide critical data for tackling climate and tourism challenges in the Mediterranean. By delivering actionable insights, the satellite will enable local governments, businesses, and researchers to make informed decisions about land use, disaster management, and resource optimization, with the main objective of the project to investigate methods and technologies that help mitigate the impact of climate change in the tourism sector. This aligns with Open Cosmos’ broader mission to democratize access to space data and drive meaningful change through innovation.

The project is co-funded by European grants and backed by regional stakeholders. The satellite will generate data to manage pressing issues such as wildfires, floods, and tourist saturation. These efforts will enhance the resilience of the Balearic Islands, setting an example for other regions facing similar challenges.

“Measuring the effects of climate change and human activity on our islands is key to preserving the paradise we live in,” said Rafel Jordà Siquier, CEO of Open Cosmos. “This project not only puts the islands on the international map of the space sector but also reinforces the commitment to sustainability and innovation that defines this community.”

While Open Cosmos provides the technical backbone of the initiative, the company has fostered collaboration across public, private, and academic sectors. Partners such as Wireless DNA S.L., the University of the Balearic Islands, and Garden Hotels are contributing to the development of applications that will use the satellite’s data. The hotel industry, represented by the Hotel Business Federation of Mallorca (FEHM), has also endorsed the project, recognizing its potential to transform tourism management.

Scheduled for launch in late 2025, the satellite represents a significant milestone in Open Cosmos’ growing portfolio of impactful space missions. By applying its satellite expertise to address climate and economic challenges, the company not only advances its technological capabilities but also strengthens its reputation as a leader in sustainable innovation.
