Interstellar Technologies Inc., a Japanese space infrastructure company, has entered a strategic partnership with Woven by Toyota, a Toyota Group company. The alliance involves a capital investment of ¥7 billion ($44.3 million USD) during the first close of Interstellar’s Series F funding round, with further contributions expected. As part of the collaboration, Woven by Toyota will also appoint a director to Interstellar’s board, emphasizing a shared focus on governance and strategic growth.
The alliance leverages Toyota’s manufacturing expertise to address the growing demand for scalable and cost-effective rocket production. This need has become pressing as Japan aims to increase domestic launch capacity to 30 launches annually by the 2030s, a substantial leap from its current rate. Interstellar plans to adopt Toyota’s production methodologies to streamline its rocket manufacturing processes, strengthening its supply chain and reducing costs.
Interstellar is also pursuing a vertically integrated business model that combines rocket launches with satellite communications. This approach mirrors the success of companies like SpaceX, whose Starlink program has demonstrated the market potential of combining launch services with satellite internet. Interstellar’s satellite communications technology aims to provide high-speed, next-generation broadband directly to ground devices, such as smartphones.
The partnership builds on years of collaboration between Interstellar and Toyota, which began in 2020 with personnel exchanges. This deepened relationship marks a pivotal step in Interstellar’s evolution toward becoming a comprehensive space infrastructure provider, capable of meeting both domestic and international demands.
Woven by Toyota’s CEO, Hajime Kumabe, highlighted the alignment between the two companies, emphasizing the potential of Toyota’s manufacturing capabilities to transform rocket production. Similarly, Takahiro Inagawa, CEO of Interstellar Technologies, praised the partnership’s potential to transition the company’s operations from bespoke production to scalable manufacturing.
