Starlab Space LLC announced it has established its first international subsidiary, Starlab Space GmbH, in Bremen, Germany. This move underscores the company’s commitment to fostering global partnerships, advancing microgravity research, and sustaining human presence in low-Earth orbit (LEO) as the International Space Station (ISS) approaches the end of its operational life.
The new subsidiary, Starlab Space Europe, will serve as a regional hub to strengthen collaborations with the European Space Agency (ESA) and its member nations. Co-located with Airbus Defence and Space in Bremen, the subsidiary benefits from proximity to Airbus’ cutting-edge infrastructure and experienced workforce, including teams supporting the ISS Columbus Module and NASA’s Orion European Service Module.
Starlab Space CEO Tim Kopra emphasized the importance of international cooperation in commercial space station operations. “Successful and sustainable operation of a commercial space station requires international partners, and therefore, a presence beyond America’s borders, “he stated. “Joining American and European presence sets the stage for life beyond the ISS, one that has a global, permanent crew thriving in low-Earth orbit and leading research that can transform all of humanity.”
Starlab Space operates as a U.S.-led joint venture, with partners including Voyager Space, Airbus, Mitsubishi Corporation, and MDA Space. Strategic partnerships with organizations such as Palantir Technologies, Hilton, Northrop Grumman, and The Ohio State University further enhance its capabilities.
Airbus has appointed Manfred Jaumann, a 33-year veteran of the company, as managing director of Starlab Space Europe. Jaumann’s expertise in LEO and suborbital programs, as well as his leadership in ISS services and missions, positions the subsidiary to play a key role in the transition to a commercial LEO economy.
