Elon Musk posted a letter that has been submitted to Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr., showing that SpaceX has taken formal steps toward transforming its Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, into a fully incorporated city. This move aligns with Musk’s broader vision to centralize operations in Texas, following years of investment in the region. Musk first hinted at relocating SpaceX headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to Texas in July and confirmed the move in the same post on X, saying, “SpaceX HQ will now officially be in the city of Starbase, Texas!”

The Starbase site, situated near the Mexican border, serves as the primary production and testing hub for SpaceX’s Starship rockets. These systems are designed for future lunar and Martian missions. Over the years, the facility has expanded significantly, including the addition of a large warehouse, known as the Starfactory, which replaced temporary production tents.

According to a 2024 economic impact report, SpaceX operations in the area have created over 3,000 jobs. SpaceX has petitioned Cameron County to hold an election that would allow the site to incorporate as a new city in the Rio Grande Valley. The company cited the need for streamlined development to accommodate a growing workforce and improve local amenities.

“We need the ability to grow Starbase as a community,” SpaceX stated in its petition. Incorporating Starbase, they argue, would enable the construction of necessary infrastructure to support the site’s ambitions and workforce. However, local authorities must approve this plan before it can move forward.

SpaceX’s Hawthorne headquarters, with approximately 13,000 employees, has long been the operational center for the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets. A relocation to Texas would represent a significant shift, emphasizing Musk’s increasing focus on the state as a hub for his ventures, including SpaceX and social media company X.

This move also reflects Musk’s ongoing departure from California, signaling a broader alignment with Texas’s business climate and political landscape. While challenges remain, the incorporation of Starbase marks a pivotal step in SpaceX’s vision for its future.
