Space42, a UAE-based space technology company, and ICEYE, a leader in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite operations, announced the establishment of a joint venture to manufacture SAR satellites in the UAE. The partnership builds on their successful collaboration, including the recent launch of Foresight-1, the UAE’s first SAR satellite, in August 2024.
This joint venture focuses on manufacturing satellites and deploying SAR missions to enhance Earth Observation (EO) capabilities. The initiative aligns with the UAE’s EO Program, which aims to strengthen national expertise in satellite remote sensing and data analysis. The growing demand for high-resolution SAR imagery, with applications ranging from environmental monitoring to disaster response, underscores the importance of this collaboration.
Space42’s facilities in Abu Dhabi will house the new manufacturing operations. These facilities include Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT) centers and low Earth orbit (LEO) mission operation services. By creating a local SAR ecosystem, the venture fosters technology transfer and knowledge sharing to advance national research and development for future SAR payloads.
According to Hasan Al Hosani, CEO of Bayanat Smart Solutions, Space42, the joint venture demonstrates a commitment to advancing space systems and AI-enabled solutions. “This partnership supports the UAE’s ambitions to lead in space technology by bringing SAR manufacturing to the region,” Al Hosani said. “It will position the nation as a global leader in this field.”
The collaboration also benefits the UAE’s industrial ecosystem by localizing the supply chain and engaging Emirati talent. Emiratization efforts will gain momentum, offering opportunities for national professionals to drive innovation and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
Rafal Modrzewski, CEO and Co-founder of ICEYE, highlighted the operational efficiencies the venture brings to SAR constellations. “We are proud to extend our production line to manufacture SAR technologies in the UAE,” Modrzewski said. “This partnership leverages both companies’ strengths to advance the UAE’s space program and SAR capabilities.”
