SpaceX launched the third test flight for their behemoth rocket Starship today on their 22nd birthday achieving two major milestones – successfully reaching orbit and reentering the Earth’s atmosphere. After years of development, setbacks, and explosive test flights, Starship’s successful journey to orbital heights signals a promising future for SpaceX and humanity’s ambitions beyond our home planet.

The test flight commenced from Boca Chica, Texas on Thursday morning with a clean separation of the first and second stages, a crucial step in SpaceX’s pursuit of reusable rocket technology. However, the descent of the first stage, aimed at a controlled sea landing, encountered difficulties, resulting in dropped communication and ultimately the loss of the spacecraft at sea.

Despite the disappointing end, the second stage of the Starship soared to an altitude of approximately 230 kilometres, executing essential tests including fuel transfer and payload door operations. These tests represent critical milestones towards SpaceX’s goal of interplanetary travel, particularly concerning in-space refuelling capabilities.

During re-entry, the craft endured extreme temperatures, evident from live video footage showing glowing plasma surrounding its surface.

Starship, with its towering 121-meter stature, stands as the most powerful rocket ever constructed. It is poised to revolutionize space exploration with its reusability and cost efficiency.
