Insider Brief

  • USU joins the U.S. Space Command’s academic initiative to enhance military and academic collaboration in space operations, focusing on global security.
  • The partnership aims to develop the future workforce, advance space research and promote strategic space discussions, offering USU students and faculty access to exclusive educational and research opportunities.
  • USU’s participation underscores the importance of academia in national defense and space exploration, benefiting its aerospace department and reinforcing collaboration with the military sector.

Utah State University (USU) has been chosen to join the United States Space Command’s University Academic Engagement Enterprise. This partnership aims to enhance collaboration between the academic world and the Space Command, which is focused on integrating military space power into global operations across multiple domains. This integration is designed to deter aggression, protect national interests, and defeat threats as needed.

The partnership with Space Command will pursue four primary objectives: engaging the future workforce, boosting space-applied research and innovation, broadening space-focused analytic partnerships, and fostering strategic discussions on space. Participating academic institutions, including USU, will benefit from advanced space education, exclusive access to events such as webinars and symposia, and opportunities for collaborative research, technology development, and student internships.

Invited to apply for the program launched in 2022, USU’s inclusion is especially relevant to its aerospace department, though the benefits extend across the entire university. This collaboration underscores the strategic importance of academic contributions to national defense and space exploration efforts.

“We are honored to have this opportunity to be a part of the U.S. Space Command. Many cutting-edge institutions are a part of this project, and we look forward to contributing to this innovative partnership.”

It is crucial to recognize that a significant portion of aerospace funding is closely linked to the military and intelligence sectors. There exists a common language within these domains, and we need to reinforce the importance of aligning our educational efforts.”
