The earth observation satellite market sits inside a much larger space manufacturing ecosystem, but it represents a distinct and rapidly evolving segment. Across the 2019-2024 period, EO satellites have consistently accounted for around 9% of all satellites launched globally, a meaningful slice, and one dominated by a handful of commercial and state-backed operators running large constellations.
Annual production is cyclical rather than linear. Space Insider recorded 1,116 EO satellites built and launched between 2019 and 2024, with annual deliveries rising from 90 to a peak of 324 in 2023 before correcting to 204 in 2024, a 17.8% compound annual rate over the period, but with substantial year-on-year variation. The 2023 peak reflected a convergence of major deployments: Planet Labs launched 72 SuperDove satellites in a single year, CGSTL continued aggressive deployment of its Jilin-1 Gaofen optical constellation, and the Chinese Ministry of Defense pushed out 27 Yaogan-39 satellites. When those deployments completed or paused in 2024, the number dropped sharply, not because demand softened, but because a few large operators drive the totals and their cycles are uneven.
The segment mix tells a clearer story than annual totals. Optical imaging dominates EO satellite production at around 63% of global output, supported by commercial constellations from Planet Labs, CGSTL and Satellogic alongside government imaging programs. SAR sits at around 13%, led commercially by ICEYE and by China’s Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST) on state-backed deployments. Meteorological EO accounts for roughly 9%, remote sensing 8%, reconnaissance 5%, ocean surveillance 2% and seismic/volcano monitoring a rounding error. That distribution has been stable enough through recent years to serve as a reliable baseline.
The Top Earth Observation Companies Building Satellites Globally
The global earth observation manufacturing market is concentrated. Between 2019 and 2024, the top 10 earth observation companies accounted for around 59% of all EO satellites built and launched globally, and two companies sat well ahead of the rest.
Planet Labs was the clear global leader. Over the period it delivered 263 satellites, roughly 24% of global EO output, all optical imaging platforms in the Dove and SuperDove CubeSat families, built for high-revisit global coverage at 3 to 5 meter resolution. Planet’s scale reflects the mass-production economics of small-satellite constellations and an unusually high manufacturing cadence relative to traditional EO primes.
Chang Guang Satellite Technology was the second-largest global manufacturer and the most diversified of the top tier. Space Insider recorded 159 CGSTL satellites built and launched over the same window, around 14% of global output, predominantly optical imaging through the Jilin-1 constellation, but also meteorological satellites, including GNSS Radio Occultation payloads supplied to Tianjin Yunyao, and remote sensing platforms. CGSTL’s breadth across mission types is unusual; most top-10 manufacturers specialize in one or two segments.
The rest of the top 10 includes SAST, primarily SAR for Chinese state programs, Satellogic, commercial optical imaging, ICEYE, all SAR and the largest commercial SAR operator globally, Aerospace (Shenzhen) DongFangHong Development, CAST, Xiyong Microelectronics Park, MinoSpace Technology and Spaceflight Systems.
Geographic concentration is striking. Six of the top 10 manufacturers are Chinese, together producing over a quarter of global EO output across the period. Combined with US production, China and the US account for roughly 74% of all EO satellites built and launched globally. Europe sits at around 8% of global production, a modest share, but as the next section sets out, a specialized one.
Europe’s Earth Observation Satellite Manufacturers
Europe produces fewer EO satellites than China or the United States, but the composition of its output differs meaningfully from the global picture, and those differences matter for understanding where European competitive advantage sits.
Optical imaging is still the largest European segment at around 54% of regional production, but SAR is substantially more important than its global share implies. European SAR production runs at around 24% of regional output, nearly double the global average, reflecting ICEYE’s outsized role and the wider European specialization in radar technology. Remote sensing takes around 12%, against 8% globally, reconnaissance 6%, and meteorological and ocean surveillance around 2% each.
The European manufacturer base is concentrated as the top 11 European earth observation satellite manufacturers accounted for more than 80% of regional production between 2019 and 2024. ICEYE led at roughly 17% of European output, all SAR. Alba Orbital and Airbus were tied at around 13% each, with very different profiles: Alba Orbital’s UNICORN series focuses on ultra-small, cost-effective optical and remote sensing platforms aimed at commercial, academic and governmental users, while Airbus spans imaging, reconnaissance and ocean surveillance, often in partnership with Thales Alenia Space on major defense programs. SatRevolution, OpenCosmos, Kongsberg NanoAvionics, OHB, Thales Alenia, AAC Clyde Space, SATLANTIS and ISISpace round out the leading group, between them covering the full spread of mission types.
European EO production is heavily domestically focused. Only a small fraction of European-built EO satellites are exported. Across the 2019-2024 period, just 12 of 89 European EO satellites went to foreign operators, with Thailand, Oman and the UAE as the main destinations. That reflects both the scale of European domestic demand, led by the EU’s Copernicus program and national defense agencies, and the regulatory overlay governing EO satellite exports.
Where the Earth Observation Market Is Growing
Several patterns in the underlying production data point to where growth is concentrating on the supply side of the earth observation market.
SAR remains structurally under-represented relative to demand. At around 13% of global production and 24% of European production, SAR output is scaling faster than those shares imply. Commercial SAR operators, ICEYE, Capella Space and Umbra, are growing to meet defense, maritime domain awareness and disaster-response demand that optical imagery cannot serve.
Meteorological EO is emerging as a commercial category. The 2024 deployment of 26 YUNYAO-1 GNSS Radio Occultation satellites by Tianjin Yunyao Aerospace, built by CGSTL, is an early signal that atmospheric monitoring is moving beyond government agencies into commercial operation. China is leading next-generation meteorological deployments globally.
Constellation lifecycle dynamics will shape the next five years. Recent volatility in annual EO satellite deliveries, the rise to 324 satellites in 2023 followed by the correction to 204 in 2024, shows how sensitive the totals are to a small number of large operators and their deployment cycles. Planet Labs halving its launched output in 2024 reflects operational maturity rather than market weakness.
