Radisys, a leader in open telecom solutions, and Ramon.Space, known for its space-resilient computing infrastructure, have announced a key partnership to develop advanced 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) technologies. The collaboration will focus on integrating 3GPP-based 5G technologies with space-ready communication processors, creating new opportunities for 5G deployment in space.

At the core of this effort is Radisys’ Release 17 compliant 5G NTN Radio Access Network (RAN) software, which will be paired with Ramon.Space’s robust space-resilient hardware. The partnership aims to facilitate the launch of a fully functional 5G gNodeB (gNB) in space. These gNBs, once placed on satellites orbiting the Earth, will enable high-speed, low-latency communication across vast distances. They can connect to devices on the ground, in the air, or at sea, extending the reach of 5G to underserved and remote regions.

The integrated system will support flexible RAN split options, balancing data processing between space-based platforms and ground stations. This approach is expected to improve efficiency in data transfer and connectivity, benefiting applications such as broadband internet, IoT, disaster recovery, and remote industrial operations.

This partnership offers several benefits:
Advanced Integration: The combined hardware and software will allow for optimized 5G NTN deployment, with full 5G gNB capabilities in space.
Innovative Architecture: Radisys’ software will be hosted on Ramon.Space’s On Board Processors (OBPs), allowing for flexible deployment strategies between satellites and ground stations.
Cost Efficiency: By using standardized 3GPP protocols, the collaboration aims to reduce the cost of space communications, opening doors to new applications.
Scalable Solutions: The integrated solution is designed to scale, offering higher capacity and more efficient operations, addressing needs across industries from IoT to broadband.

“This collaboration represents a significant leap forward in the evolution of 5G NTN technologies, paving the way for innovative applications and enhanced connectivity in space,” said Munish Chhabra, Head of Mobility Software and Services Business at Radisys, “Using Ramon.Space’s hardware with disaggregated software that incorporates standardized 3GPP protocols is a key step in reducing the cost of space communications and opening new use cases. This partnership with Ramon.Space allows us to combine our strengths and deliver cutting-edge solutions that will transform the future of space-based connectivity.”

Eric Anden, Head of Communication Products, Ramon.Space emphasized that this partnership marks a major step forward in space-based 5G communications, stating “together, we are poised to revolutionize space-based 5G communications, bringing unprecedented capabilities to a wide range of applications while also enabling new, disruptive innovation into the market.”
