Ursa Major, a Colorado-based defense contractor, reportedly announced it will match a $12.5 million investment from the Pentagon to advance its solid rocket motor manufacturing process. The Pentagon’s Office of Strategic Capital (OSC) initiated the investment to strengthen key supply chain technologies, in collaboration with the US Navy’s Program Executive Office for Integrated Warfare Systems.
Ursa Major CEO, Dan Jablonsky, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “Ursa Major is revolutionizing manufacturing approaches used in propulsion development, building flexibility of production and scalability for our defense customers.”
The project, awarded in July, focuses on enhancing key manufacturing capabilities, including propellant production, additive manufacturing, and composite case winding. These advancements aim to support the manufacturing of components for the Navy’s Mk104 Dual Thrust Rocket Motor, which powers the SM-2, SM-3, and SM-6 missile systems.
The OSC, established by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in 2022, aims to boost private investment in defense technology startups. Austin acknowledged the funding challenges for innovative technologies and emphasized the importance of partnerships with private sector companies to bring new technologies to scale.
