NASA has awarded Intuitive Machines a significant contract, valued at up to $4.82 billion, for communication and navigation services in the near-space region. This region spans from Earth’s surface to beyond the Moon and is vital in supporting the space agency’s lunar exploration goals under the Artemis program. The contract, issued under NASA’s Near Space Network (NSN), is a Firm-Fixed-Price, Multiple Award, Indefinite-Delivery/Indefinite-Quantity (IDIQ) Task Order Contract. It includes a five-year base period starting on October 1, 2024, with an option to extend for another five years through September 2034.
Under this agreement, Intuitive Machines will deploy a constellation of lunar relay satellites designed to enhance communication and navigation capabilities for missions to the Moon. These satellites will provide services from geostationary orbit to the cislunar region, enabling higher-quality data transmission, including 4K video, and improving navigation precision for lunar landing site selection and resource prospecting. The company’s new lunar satellite network aligns with its broader vision of commercializing lunar activities, with a focus on scaling cargo and infrastructure delivery, data transmission, and autonomous operations on the Moon.
This marks a significant step for Intuitive Machines, as the company seeks to establish a robust lunar economy by providing vital infrastructure to support ongoing exploration efforts. Intuitive Machines CEO Steve Altemus emphasized the importance of this contract, stating, “We’re pleased to partner with NASA, as one team, to support the Artemis campaign and endeavors to expand the lunar economy.”

The contract solidifies Intuitive Machines’ leadership in space communications and navigation, a critical area for NASA’s Artemis missions. These missions aim to establish a long-term human presence on the Moon and pave the way for future deep space exploration.
NASA has already invested $118 million in Intuitive Machines’ Odysseus spacecraft, which became the first U.S. lander to reach the Moon in over 50 years. As Intuitive Machines continues to develop and deploy its lunar relay satellites, its infrastructure will play an essential role in ensuring the success of future Artemis missions.
Following the announcement, Intuitive Machines’ shares surged by 38%, reflecting market confidence in the company’s strategic role in supporting NASA’s long-term lunar ambitions.
