The UK Space Agency has granted £2.5 million to ten satellite data projects as part of its Unlocking Space for Business programme. Each project has received up to £400,000 to develop innovative solutions that combine satellite data with advanced technologies like AI, quantum computing, and machine learning. The initiative aims to enhance sectors such as transport, logistics, and financial services.
One of the standout projects, led by Sports City Management Company, focuses on improving fan travel to Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium and the new Co-op Live arena. By integrating satellite data from the European Space Agency with AI and machine learning, the project seeks to reduce congestion and make travel more sustainable. In collaboration with Transport for Greater Manchester, the project will provide insights into crowd flow and transport needs, helping to optimize event planning.
Another project, developed by Octopus Investments in partnership with Treeconomy, will use satellite-based Earth observation data to monitor and evaluate nature restoration efforts. By combining AI and remote sensing data from sources like Landsat and Sentinel-2, the project aims to improve confidence in environmental metrics, guiding better investment decisions in conservation.
The Unlocking Space for Business programme offers financial support and includes workshops, networking events, and online resources to help companies understand and leverage satellite data. This initiative is part of the UK Space Agency’s broader strategy to drive innovation, foster growth, and position the UK as a leader in the space economy.
Dr. Craig Brown, Investment Director at the UK Space Agency, highlighted the potential of these projects to accelerate innovation and investment across various UK industries. By tapping into the power of satellite data, the UK Space Agency is working to unlock new opportunities and drive the sector forward.
