ispace, a Tokyo-based lunar exploration company, announced it has entered into a consulting agreement with Komatsu, a global construction and mining equipment leader. This partnership aims to advance the development of construction machinery designed for the Moon’s challenging environment.
Komatsu has been part of Japan’s “STARDUST Programs” since 2021. This initiative, supported by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, focuses on developing innovative technology for unmanned outer space construction. As part of its future vision, Komatsu plans to create construction equipment capable of operating on the lunar surface.
Under the agreement, ispace will leverage its expertise to guide Komatsu in selecting the right space-tested components and materials. ispace’s experience in designing space-test equipment will also play a crucial role in this collaboration.
Takeshi Hakamada, Founder and CEO of ispace, highlighted the significance of this partnership. He emphasized that combining ispace’s knowledge with Komatsu’s technological capabilities will accelerate the development of autonomous construction equipment, vital for future lunar construction efforts.
