Germany-based space technology company, Vyoma, has secured two significant contracts from the European Defence Fund (EDF) to bolster space security. These contracts, part of the EMISSARY and STAALION projects, will strengthen Europe’s space domain awareness and defense capabilities.
The EMISSARY project aims to build a network of ground and space-based sensors to feed data into a European Space Command and Control (SC2) center. This center will analyze the data and share a unified view of space threats with national defence entities across Europe. Vyoma will develop and test a scheduling module for space-based sensors, ensuring efficient onboard operations and data retrieval. The project, led by Leonardo, involves over 40 partners from 13 EU countries and has a budget of €100 million. It will last for four years.
The STAALION project, led by Nurjana Technologies, has a €6 million budget and a two-year timeline. It aims to protect European assets in space by creating a system for rapid threat detection and response, covering Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO). Vyoma will focus on the LEO space segment, designing the orbital structure and developing detection software to identify potential threats quickly and accurately.
Vyoma’s contributions to both projects emphasize the company’s commitment to advancing Europe’s defence capabilities in space. By providing independent space domain awareness and management systems, Vyoma is helping to ensure the security of critical European infrastructure and supporting the continent’s geostrategic autonomy.
