Insider Brief:
- LeoLabs has received a second Consolidated Pathfinder order from NOAA’s Office of Space Commerce.
- The order will help develop the U.S. Traffic Coordination System for Space (TraCSS) and allow LeoLabs to continue its work on the Pathfinder project by extending the live data collection period.
- TraCSS is a civil-led initiative aimed at enhancing space safety and security.
LeoLabs has announced a second Consolidated Pathfinder order from NOAA’s Office of Space Commerce (OSC). This order supports the development of the U.S. Traffic Coordination System for Space (TraCSS), a civil-led initiative aimed at enhancing space safety and security.
The new order allows LeoLabs to continue its work on the Pathfinder project by extending the live data collection period. This extension aims to identify further opportunities for performance improvement and metric validation. LeoLabs will use its expertise, artificial intelligence techniques, and extensive commercial dataset, which includes over 20,000 objects and millions of daily conjunction data messages.
This project builds on the success of the previous data collection period, where the team confirmed data flows and conducted object tasking using a mission planning tool. LeoLabs CEO Tony Frazier discussed the importance of this development, stating, “Today’s announcement is a positive step towards ensuring the U.S. Traffic Coordination System for Space meets the safety needs of the growing space economy. LeoLabs is proud to contribute our expertise, data, and services to this crucial effort.”
The Consolidated Pathfinder is part of a series of projects supporting TraCSS by testing and integrating commercial Space Situational Awareness (SSA) capabilities. This order reflects the rapid progress made by the U.S. Government in developing this system, in line with Space Policy Directive-3 (SPD-3). SPD-3 calls for a national Space Traffic Management (STM) service managed by a civil government agency.
