Planet Labs Extends Contract with Carbon Mapper to Tackle Global Emissions

Planet Labs, a leader in providing daily Earth data, has announced a multi-year data-license agreement with Carbon Mapper, a non-profit organization. The $20 million contract extension will allow Carbon Mapper to access hyperspectral core imagery from Planet’s Tanager satellite constellation until 2030.

The Tanager satellites, set to launch in 2024, will be able to precisely measure facility-scale methane and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions around the world by capturing hyperspectral imagery across the visible and shortwave infrared regions as reported in the Business Wire. This data will be made publicly available through Carbon Mapper’s data portal, enabling decision-makers to take action and reduce global emissions. Furthermore, the captured images will be able to be used for a wide range of applications beyond emissions monitoring, including commercial, civil, and defense use cases.
