Bellevue-based startup, Lumen Orbit has made waves in the space industry with its ambitious plan to deploy a constellation of satellites designed for in-space data processing. Recently, the company announced the successful closure of a $2.4 million pre-seed investment round, propelling its mission to revolutionize satellite-based data processing.
Led by CEO Philip Johnston and a team of industry veterans, including former SpaceX engineer Adi Oltean, Lumen Orbit aims to establish a network of orbital data centers for processing raw data collected by other satellites. By utilizing onboard GPUs and AI models, Lumen’s satellites will extract valuable insights from the data before downlinking it to Earth, thereby reducing bandwidth usage, cost, and latency.
Lumen Orbit has strategically partnered with Ansys and Solidworks for satellite design and development, while simultaneously navigating regulatory processes with the FCC and the International Telecommunication Union. With a clear roadmap in place, the company plans to launch its first demonstrator satellite in May 2025 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
