Last week, Space Impulse published a piece covering Dava Newman, Josef Aschbacher and Matthias Maurer’s panel discussion on travelling to Mars and the health concerns for astronauts in space at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Still in the snowy, alpine resort town, BCG’s Sylvain Duranton grabbed an interview with André Loesekrug-Pietri, Chairman of the Joint European Disruptive Initiative (JEDI), to discuss deep tech, the rapid acceleration of innovation, and what these developments mean for business and society in the years ahead.

The end of the interview should benefit our readers, as Loesekrug-Pietri — who is not only Chairman of JEDI but Senior Advisor at BCG — gave his most exciting predictions in deep tech for 2023.

Huge Impact

After extolling how big synthetic biology will be this year, Loesekrug-Pietri gave his predictions for the space industry:

“Space looks like something which still was kind of the last frontier of mankind, but space now is affecting communication, it is completely disrupting the communication environment,” he said, before adding it is also changing the way we do agriculture.

When someone from JEDI says that, we should listen, as JEDI aims to accelerate Europe’s technological leadership by financing and nurturing the development of breakthrough technologies like decarbonization, healthcare, digital, and new frontiers, bringing together more than 120 heads of the most large European research institutions and universities, deep tech startups, technology corporates, and venture capitals.

“For example, understanding how soils capture carbon, what is the value of the soil, reduce the amount of insurance. I mean, it is going to have an impact which will be difficult to measure, but which will be tremendous,” he said.

Will Loesekrug-Pietri’s predictions come true? We will have to see, but let’s keep our fingers crossed.
